HCI International 2023 invites you to participate and contribute through papers, posters, tutorials, workshops and a Student Design Competition to a major international forum for the dissemination and exchange of up-to-date scientific information on theoretical and applied areas of HCI.
Important deadlines:
The first three days of the conference (23-25 July) will comprise virtual only parallel sessions for paper presentations with remote only participation and ‘in-person’ only satellite events (Tutorials and Workshops). The Opening Plenary Session (evening of 25 July) and the parallel sessions that will take place 26-28 July will run as hybrid events (i.e. allowing both 'in-person' and remote participation options for presenters and participants). You are encouraged to consult the Conference Program overview for information about the mode of operation for each part of the conference.
The best contributions will be awarded! The best paper of each of the HCII 2023 Thematic Areas / Affiliated Conferences will be presented with an award. The best poster extended abstract (in the form of a short research paper) will also receive an award.
The Student Design Competition gives to College and University students of all grades an opportunity to present their design idea, by submitting an abstract and a video clip (up to 5-minutes). Three awards will be presented, the GOLD ($1000), the SILVER ($500) and the BRONZE ($250). Proposals submission through the Conference Management System (CMS) is now open.
The Conference Proceedings will be published by Springer in a multi-volume set. Papers will appear in the LNCS and LNAI series, while poster extended abstracts will be published in the CCIS series. All volumes will be available on-line through the SpringerLink Digital Library, readily accessible by subscribing libraries, and indexed by a number of services, including: CPCI, part of Clarivate Analytics’ Web of Science; Scopus; EI Engineering Index; ACM Digital Library; Google Scholar; DBLP, etc.
Registration: As HCII2023 will run as a ‘hybrid’ conference, participants during their on-line registration process, have the option to select their preferred attendance method (‘in-person’ or ‘virtual’). Detailed information about registration is available through the Conference website.
The HCII2023 Program for Student Volunteers gives College and University full time students from around the world the opportunity to attend ‘in-person’ and contribute to one of the most prestigious conferences in the field of computing and HCI.
The Student Volunteer role involves a range of duties to be performed ‘in-person’, including, but not limited to: assisting in the running of hybrid sessions; assisting the Conference Secretariat team; assisting Conference participants; contributing to the overall smooth running of the Conference functions. Late applications through the Conference Management System (CMS) are welcome and will be placed in the reserve list to be considered in the order in which they are received.
You still have the opportunity to present the latest results of your work to an international audience, by submitting a proposal for a Paper or a Poster presentation.
"Late Breaking Work" - PAPER proposals: Prospective authors should submit extended abstracts (800 words) corresponding to one of the Conference Thematic Areas. Following a peer-review process, a decision is communicated to the authors. After acceptance, the authors, apart from giving an oral presentation during the Conference, will also have the opportunity of having a full paper included in the "HCII 2023 - Late Breaking Papers" Springer LNCS volumes of the Proceedings to be published after the conference.
"Late Breaking Work" - POSTER proposals: Prospective authors should submit abstracts (300 words). Following a peer-review process, a decision is communicated to the authors. After acceptance, the authors, apart from presenting their work during the Conference, will also have the opportunity of having an extended poster abstract (short research paper) included in the "HCII 2023 - Late Breaking Posters" Springer CCIS volumes of the Proceedings to be published after the conference.
The “Late Breaking Work” paper and poster volumes, also published by Springer, together with the volumes to be published before the conference, will comprise the full set of the HCII 2023 Conference Proceedings.
The "HCII 2023 - Late Breaking Work" paper and poster volumes, which will appear after the conference, are no different, in academic terms, from the volumes that will appear before the conference. Papers and Posters in these volumes are treated in exactly the same way, i.e. single-blind peer-reviewed by at least two reviewers, referenced, indexed, published in the Springer digital library, etc. All volumes together will form the full set of the HCII 2023 Conference Proceedings.
Important deadlines for both paper and poster proposals:
The full Workshops' Program, which will run 'in-person' only, between 23 - 25 July 2023, is available with 8 Workshops on offer covering a wide spectrum of topics.
Please visit the webpage of each Workshop for information about its aim, topics and expected outcome, as well as the submission guidelines to prospective participants and the relevant deadlines that apply.
Workshop participation does not require a conference registration, but a separate small fee per workshop is applicable.

The 'HCI MEDAL FOR SOCIETAL IMPACT' was established in 2022 to be awarded to distinguished HCI academics, researchers, or professionals in recognition of the impact of their work in the field of HCI to society. The idea of the medal is to inspire younger generations towards accomplishments that leave a major footprint on society and foster well-being and eudemonia. The nomination originates from an international committee and the Medal will be conferred during the conference Opening Plenary Session, to be followed by the Keynote speech.
The recipient of the 'HCI MEDAL FOR SOCIETAL IMPACT' for 2023 is Sara Kiesler (University Professor and Hillman Professor Emerita of Computer Science and Human-Computer Interaction at Carnegie Mellon University, and Program Director of the National Science Foundation).

The ‘HCII Design Café’ is a new interactive satellite event to be held in person for the first time during the HCII2023 conference. The goal is to provide a forum for (re)thinking and discussing HCI issues in the context of broader topics relevant to society and the economy. Inspired by the ‘World Café method’, the HCII Design Café is based on a proven valuable participatory scheme for engaging on a specific topic, in a moderated small-group setting, with interested stakeholders that come from different professions in related fields. The aim is to stimulate open dialogue, constructive deliberations, and informal but meaningful collaboration, to empower creativity and inspiration in a casual atmosphere, and to promote innovative approaches for transforming ideas into practice. The focus of the HCII Design Café will be on two major challenges:
The HCII 2023 Design Café is conceived, coordinated, and moderated by Christine Riedmann-Streitz (MarkenFactory GmbH, Germany) and it will feature a keynote speech by Norbert Streitz (Smart Future Initiative, Germany). Discussions at the HCII 2023 Design Café Tables will be hosted by: Aaron Marcus (Aaron Marcus and Associates, USA), Elizabeth Rosenzweig (Brandeis University, USA), Pei-Luen Patrick Rau (Tsinghua University, P.R. China), and George Margetis, Margherita Antona and Stavroula Ntoa (FORTH-ICS, Greece).
The call for participation is available through the conference website. The results of the HCII2023 Design Café will be published.
For the agenda and the registration requirements, please also have a look at the conference website.

Copenhagen, with a population of more than 1.3 million in the wider urban area, is regularly top ranked among European cities for quality of life. The Danish capital is one of the world’s greenest, cleanest and most sustainable urban centers. By having buses and metro running frequently and around the clock and with more than a third of the population using cycling as their main transportation for work, Copenhagen is compact, accessible and a very easy place to explore.
As one of Europe’s oldest capitals, hosting the world’s oldest monarchy, Copenhagen is rich in historical buildings and sights, like the Amalienborg Palace, to get a taste of royal life, the Kronborg Castle, known worldwide as Hamlet's and Shakespeare's castle, the Rosenborg Castle in the King’s Garden, Tivoli Gardens in the heart of the city and many more. In addition, many museums offer a wide range of exhibitions including the Denmark's National Museum, ranging from Stone Age to modern history, the National Gallery of Denmark and the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek.
Prepare your trip with information available through VisitCopenhagen, the official guide of the tourism organization of Copenhagen and their YouTube channel.
ChatGPT (https://chat.openai.com/) is attracting considerable interest from the public and the media nowadays. ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence chatbot developed by OpenAI and launched in November 2022. In the first five days of its launch, 1 million users used it, and it reached 100 million users in January 2023. What is ChatGPT? I asked ChatGPT itself this question.
Question: What is ChatGPT?
Answer:
"I am ChatGPT, a large language model developed by OpenAI. I have been trained on a vast corpus of text data, allowing me to generate human-like responses to a wide range of questions and prompts. I use natural language processing techniques to understand the meaning and context of text input, and then generate responses based on that understanding. I can assist with tasks such as answering questions, generating text, providing recommendations, and more."
Question: Who is your owner?
Answer:
"As an artificial intelligence language model, I don't have an owner in the traditional sense. I was developed and are maintained by OpenAI, which is a research organization focused on developing advanced artificial intelligence in a way that is safe and beneficial for humanity. OpenAI is backed by a team of researchers and engineers who work on developing cutting-edge machine learning algorithms and tools, including language models like me."
I have also started to test ChatGPT by asking HCI questions such as exam questions. Responses have been accurate and very fast. Then I asked a social science professor to try her exams and difficult essay questions. Again, all responses were accurate and fast.
Since the appearance of ChatGPT, Google (1) and Meta (2) have also released their versions of artificial intelligence chatbots. And Microsoft (3) plans to integrate powerful A.I. Technology into its search engine.
The impact of these A.I. technologies on human life is enormous. On the one hand, it makes access to knowledge quick and easy. But on the other hand, its impact on many types of work like journalistic reports (4), marketing, and particularly education is enormous. In education, online teaching was already a significant change that people in educational institutions still struggle with. And now, this technology makes testing students' knowledge almost impossible. Many universities have started to discuss the effect of this technology on education. At the same time, Stanford University announced they have new projects to build an algorithm to differentiate I.A. text from human text (5). I am sure some technological solution will be found. However, until we find such solutions and all universities worldwide can acquire them, we find ourselves in a period of uncertainty on how to deal with ChatGPT.
